What compound interest is
Simple interest applies the rate only to the original principal. Compound interest applies the rate to principal plus interest already earned. Over long horizons the difference becomes large even at modest rates.
Compounding frequency matters: annual, monthly, or daily. More frequent compounding usually means slightly higher effective growth for the same nominal annual rate — unless the product quotes an already-effective rate.
How to use the calculators
Start with principal, annual (or daily) rate, and time horizon. On the daily tool you can also add deposits, a reinvest percentage, and weekend filtering.
Read future value first, then interest earned, contributions, and any cash withdrawn. Use the balance-over-time chart to see when growth accelerates.
How to read the numbers
Future value is the ending balance if deposits, rate, and schedule hold. It is not a guarantee — real products change rates and may charge fees.
Effective growth over the horizon helps compare scenarios with different deposit patterns. Extreme daily percentage rates can imply severe risk of loss.
Common mistakes
Mixing a daily rate with an annual rate field (or the reverse).
Forgetting that advertised APY already embeds compounding — do not compound it again.
Ignoring fees, taxes, and the chance the rate resets.
Worked example
Suppose you start with $5,000 at 5% nominal annual interest compounded daily for 3 years with no extra deposits. The daily rate is about 0.05/365. After roughly 1,095 days the balance is a little over $5,800 — more than simple interest on the same principal, because each day’s interest can itself earn interest.
